It would appear that Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg realised he touched a bit of a nerve the other day, when he issued a call for Britain to prepare for WAAGH!! with the Russian Orcs of Mordor. As I noted at the time, that went down with most of Mr. Rees-Mogg’s viewers – including myself – “like a plate of cold sick”, to use a British-ism. His own subscribers and viewers absolutely ROASTED him in the comments, telling him that Russia is not the enemy of Britain, and that if he wants young British men to go to war against Russia, then he should start by signing up his own son, first and foremost.
A sensible man who actually has the common touch, would take that feedback seriously, and would perhaps take some time to contemplate the gravity of his own error.
Such a man categorically would not then engage in a public debate, in his own home, with one #BasedTucker, to discuss his own comments and views with someone who actually has the knowledge and ability to push back.
Unfortunately, Sir Jacob, being a Tory toff, is not such a man. So, of course, he did precisely what I mentioned above, and invited #BasedTucker into his house for a sit-down interview.
That, as you shall see, did NOT go well for him:
I tried my best to watch it uninterrupted. I really did – several times. But I could not get through the first ten minutes without stopping to rub my temples and yell at my computer screen. I had to keep stopping it every time he said something dumb.
He was THAT woefully misinformed, and THAT genuinely stupid.
So here I am, writing this as I go along, and at this exact point that you are reading, I am barely 3 minutes into the video.
This is a man educated at Eton and Oxford. This is supposed to be one of Britain’s genuine ELITES – one of their absolute smartest and most capable men. Yet, for all of his erudition, wit, and wisdom – he is an absolute MORON.
You know the man is grasping when, within the FIRST FIVE MINUTES, he goes for the standard Tory-boy talking points about Russian aggression and expansionism.
He starts by going on about how Russia has committed acts of aggression against Britain – he references the Salisbury attacks, where supposedly Russian agents used nerve agents to kill the Skripals. The holes in that case are large enough to pilot a Death Star through, multiple times – and, note, I have not referenced Russian sources. Those are analyses and counterarguments raised by British writers, looking at the available evidence.
Then, JRM goes on about the usual Limey nonsense of how Russia’s economy is stagnating, and how Russia is looking to conquer more territory, just as it always has in the past, so that it can reconstruct the glory of the USSR and the Russian Empire.
It is at this point that someone who actually knows what the Russian economy is like (such as me), simply snorts in derision and changes the channel.
This needs to be said as forthrightly as possible: Jacob Rees-Mogg is a MORON when it comes to the Russian economy. He has ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what he is talking about. He has very clearly never been to Russia in the last 10 years, and he knows nothing whatsoever about the size, scale, depth, and power of the Russian economy.
I, on the other hand, DO know what I am talking about.
Let me state my credentials here openly. I have verifiably and observably been to Russia many times over the past decade. My first trip there was in October 2017, and my latest trip was in early July of this year. I have travelled across western Russia – to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Voronezh, Dagestan, Sochi, and Ivanovo. I speak Russian (at about the level of a five-year-old, admittedly), and I can understand and follow the Russian media sphere, at least to a limited capacity.
Not only that, but I have lived in and visited the UK numerous times. I know Britain well. I have travelled across its length and breadth. I have lost track of the number of times I have visited London. I am intimately familiar with the north of the country – cities like Manchester, York, Leeds, and Hull. I know the Midlands – Birmingham, Coventry, Derby. I know the coasts – Bournemouth, Cardiff, Swansea, and so on. I know Scotland, the south, and so on – not merely the big cities, but the small towns and villages, through which I have driven and stayed MANY times.
It is on that authority that I state categorically that Russia is in FAR better shape than Britain is.
The REAL Russian economy is growing, while Britain’s is contracting. Russia’s industrial base is enormous and can do things that the British lost the ability to do years ago. Its people live better, on average, than their British counterparts – and I can say that definitively, as I have stayed with Russian families in their homes, and not merely in Moscow.
Visit the big industrial Russian cities like Perm, Voronezh, Volgograd, Rostov-on-Don, Chelyabinsk, Bryansk, Belgorod, and Tula, and you will very quickly realise that these cities are buzzing with industry and vitality. The depth and breadth of Russia’s industrial economy is staggering. When you actually count their economy on the basis of what the ruble can buy on a purchasing power basis, the Russian economy is not worth US$2.75T, or whatever it is these days on a nominal level. It is well over US$7 TRILLION – it positively dwarfs the British economy, and once you strip out the effects of debt, you quickly realise that Britain does not have a US$3T economy, but more like a US$2T one, and can only really generate value from services.
Britain no longer has a true domestic manufacturing sector to any significant extent. It no longer has the ability to produce steel domestically. Meanwhile, the Russians, by themselves, produce almost as much steel as the entire US does – with less than half the population and an economy that is roughly one quarter the size. And that is just one aspect of their overall industrial power.
So, it is clear that JRM has no clue. And it just goes downhill from there, really.
He gets the root causes of the Ukraine War completely wrong – he claims Russia had no justification to attack Ukraine, when in fact, the roots of the conflict go all the way back to 1991. Read Scott Horton’s book, Provoked, to understand those root causes – or just read what I’ve been writing for 4 years.
He gets the contents of the Budapest Memorandum completely wrong too. He claims “Ukraine” had nuclear weapons. IT NEVER DID. Ukraine NEVER possessed nuclear weapons of any kind. The Soviet Union possessed nuclear weapons, which it stationed in the Ukrainian SSR (and Belarus, and Kazakhstan) – but the trigger mechanisms and controls sat in Moscow. Russia, as the successor state of the USSR, took control of those weapons sitting in all three other states. I analysed all of this in considerable detail almost exactly two years ago.
To repeat: NO STATE CALLED “UKRAINE“ EVER POSSESSED NUCLEAR WEAPONS. And it was never supposed to have them. But when Bellendsky got on stage at the Munich Security Conference in early 2022, and ruminated about acquiring nukes, that was the absolute last straw. The Russians had no choice at that point but to invade.
He got the Minsk Agreements wrong, too. He claims that Germany and France gave the Neo-Tsar every possible excuse to do whatever he wanted with Crimea, and therefore that was a sign of weakness. He knows nothing about those agreements. He fails to mention that both Merkel and Hollande (and, as I recall, Sarkozy as well) later admitted that the Minsk Agreements were nothing more than a ruse to give Ukraine time to build up its military.
It was Russia that stuck to the terms of Minsk I and II, and it was the West that interpreted Russia’s good-faith adherence to international law, as a sign of weakness.
He really is clueless about Crimea, too. I am willing to bet decent money that Sir Jacob doesn’t have a clue about the fact – the proven, verifiable fact, ttaken from Polish and Ukrainian sources, narrated by Jacques Baud in his superb book, The Russian Art of War – that the Russian military DID NOT invade Crimea in 2014. Instead, the Ukrainian garrison on the peninsula at the time, essentially turned their coats and became Russians.
Nor, I wager, does Sir Jacob know how Crimea came to be a part of Ukraine. There is NO TREATY that you will find which attaches Crimea to any nation called “Ukraine”. There is only an ukase, signed by Nikita Krushchyov, after a night of drunkenness and “measuring” with his buddies in the Presidium, allocating Crimea to the Ukrainian SSR for administrative purposes in the mid-1950s.
#BasedTucker, very reasonably, pressed JRM about nuclear weapons and the assertion that weakness abets aggression. JRM keeps banging on about how Russia could have rolled up Ukraine quickly – but this is nonsense. NO ONE on the Russian side, of any real influence or power, ever said that Russia could wipe out Ukraine in a few days. That trope comes from a complete misinterpretation of comments made by certain Russian media personalities – including Margarita Simonyan, head of RT and Rossiya Segodnya – who really should have known better than to say things like that on live television.
In reality, the Russian general staff originally wanted to go far harder into Ukraine than the MFIC was willing to permit. The Putin was not interested in destroying Ukraine. He wanted to force the Ukies to the negotiating table and get to an honourable compromise. So he took a huge gamble, and ordered only 90,000 or so men into Ukraine, in an economy-of-force mission in late February 2022. He was so keen to negotiate, in fact, that he ordered a unilateral Russian ceasefire on Day 2 of the conflict.
This was not an all-out invasion designed to wipe out Ukraine in 3 days. It was a precisely calibrated surgical strike. And it nearly succeeded.
The MFIC’s plan failed because Bozo BoJo – the very Prime Monster for whom JRM once worked as a Minister and adviser, and whom he still supports to this day – went to Queef to persuade the Narcofuehrer to tear up the Istanbul Agreements of 2022 and keep fighting.
That bloody clown is directly responsible for the deaths of up to THREE MILLION Ukrainian men and women. Whenever the Reaper comes for him, I have no doubt the Lord will judge him for the evil he has wrought, and cast him right into the fiery Pit.
To be clear: I sincerely hope that BoJo atones for his many and manifest sins over the course of a long and happy life, and sees his children’s children grow up. But as things stand right now, he is a wicked and evil man, and he ought to repent for what he has done.
Carrying on from there, JRM goes on about how Britain needs to beef up its defences, so as to deter Russian aggression. He talks about the need to build up Britain’s conventional arsenal – conveniently ignoring the fact that Britain has no industrial base to speak of – and points to the use of nukes against the Japanese in WWII.
#BasedTucker called him out on that latter point instantly, and rightly so. JRM really struggled to explain why the use of nukes against Japan was “proportionate”. I can tell you immediately that the toff was wrong. The use of nuclear bombs against Japan was totally illegitimate under any rules of war. The Japanese had already attempted to surrender up to six times in various different ways before August 6 1945. There is evidence to suggest that Japan sought a way toward an honourable peace as early as right after the Battle of Midway – that was in 1942.
The real reason why the US dropped the A-bomb on both Hiroshima and Nagasaki, was because of the Soviet advances into Manchuria, in which Marshall Zhukov absolutely crushed the Imperial Kwantung Army.
I would like to make it clear that this is not my version of events. It is what Marshall Zhukov himself wrote in his memoirs, which I have been reading in fits and starts for a long while now:
I do not recall the exact date, but after the end of one of the Conference meetings, Truman informed Stalin that the United States now possessed a bomb of exceptional power, without, however, naming it the atomic bomb.
As was later reported abroad, at that moment Churchill pinned his eyes on Stalin’s face, eager to observe his reaction. However, Stalin did not betray his feelings and pretended he saw nothing special in what Truman had said. Both Churchill and many other British and American commentators subsequently surmised that Stalin had probably failed to fathom the significance of the information received.
In actual fact, on returning to his quarters after this meeting Stalin in my presence told Molotov about his conversation with Truman. Molotov reacted immediately: “They are trying to bid up.”
Stalin laughed:
“Let them. I’ll have to talk it over with Kurchatov today and get him to speed things up.”
I understood they were talking about the development of the atomic bomb.
It was clear already then that the US Government was going to use the atomic bomb for reaching its imperialist goals from a position of strength. This was corroborated on August 6 and 9. Without any military need whatsoever, the Americans dropped two atomic bombs on the peaceful and densely-populated Japanese cities of Nagasaki and Hiroshima.
— from p.1,141-2 of Marshall of Victory: The Autobiography of General Georgy Zhukov, by Georgy Zhukov and Geoffrey Roberts. Emphasis added.
It is important to remember that Nagasaki, as #BasedTucker has pointed out in several past interviews with others, was home to the largest Christian community in Japan – and the bomb landed directly above the largest church in the city. There is a very chilling element of spiritual warfare involved in that attack.
And then JRM brought up the absurd, ridiculous, idiotic notion that Britain went to war with Germany so that Britain would not end up speaking German.
Good God, but this is stupid. I am grinding my teeth right now at just how blindingly idiotic this is. He literally repeated the meme.
As #BasedTucker shot back, there are substantial numbers of people living in Britain now who do not speak English. Britain, as anyone who has been there recently can tell you, is a broken, backward, pathetic country that is rapidly devolving into a total shithole. I have driven through the British countryside many times, and I am always deeply moved by how beautiful and well-maintained it is – and then, I remember what the British people have allowed to happen to their own lands, and it absolutely ENRAGES me. That same country is being overrun by people who have NOTHING to do with the British nations themselves, and have no allegiance to the values, culture, and ethics that created that beautifully pristine English countryside in the first place.
JRM asserts that Hitler would have invaded Britain. This is ABSOLUTELY untrue. The historical record proves conclusively that Hitler never wanted to go to war with Britain. He never wanted to invade the UK. It was Churchill who wanted war with Nazi Germany. JRM is right that Hitler violated the terms of the Munich Agreement with Chamberlain, and he is right that Hitler was an absolutely evil man who needed to be stopped – but he is WRONG about Hitler’s motives, or about the need for Britain to intervene in yet another continental war.
To repeat: Britain has already been invaded. Immigrants and foreigners make up nearly 20% of its modern population. JRM does not appear to understand that IMMIGRATION = WAR. It is always and everywhere the same result.
Moreover, the UK did not win WWII. It was a joint effort across the entire world – with the Soviet Union and China bearing by far the greatest brunt of the pain. The Soviets lost 27 MILLION people, and that is just the official death toll – the true number could be as high as 40 million. The Chinese lost at least 20 million, over a much longer period. The UK lost less than 400,000 people, and was reduced to a contributing power – it would not have survived, were it not for American efforts to supply the British Isles through the Lend-Lease Act and the heroism of the British and American merchant marines.
JRM then moves on to calling Ukraine a nation-state. This is facile and stupid on its face. Ukraine is NOT a sovereign state. Its “Ukrainisation” is purely a function of rabid official Russophobia and extreme neo-Nazism and racism. Russian as a language is now illegal there in any official capacity. You can find countless videos of jackbooted thugs grabbing men off the streets and throwing them into black vans as meat for the grinder on the front lines.
As #BasedTucker pointed out, the US overthrew Ukraine’s government in 2014, and now effectively owns the entire government. JRM tries to parry using the Russian “invasion” of Crimea, but Russia, as I pointed out above, did not invade Crimea.
After much waffling, JRM asserts that Britain is a better country today than it was in 1945. I think he is actually right about this – purely in a material sense. But I lived in the UK for a few years, several decades ago, and I can state from personal and clear experience that the UK today is FAR WORSE OFF than it was when I lived there back then. And it’s not hard to prove. Anyone who has ever travelled to London, can attest what a shithole it has become – how broken, atomised, depressing, and just plain foreign it is.
JRM keeps coming back to this need to “project strength” – that wars do not happen if you project strength. This is “peace through strength”, or si vis pacem, para bellum – the philosophy of great leaders and men of the past, like St. Reagan Magnus of the Right. The thing that men like JRM constantly miss, is that Reagan WANTED to settle the Cold War as an honourable peace. He DID NOT seek to go to war with the Soviets. He wanted instead to force the Soviet Union to the brink of overstretch and bankruptcy, based on his remarkably clear-eyed understanding of the failures of the Soviet economy – and he did exactly that.
Sir Jacob does NOT understand the differences between that situation back in the 1980s, and Britain’s today. Britain, and the rest of Europe, DO NOT have the economic power and capacity to overstretch Russia. Contrariwise, Russia absolutely does have the ability to wear down and destroy Europe – it is already doing so, and quite readily. Europe is already de-industrialised, broken, bankrupt, and miserable. Russia is growing, prosperous, powerful, and capable of outproducing the entirety of NATO all by itself when it comes to military hardware.
His last few points about freedom of speech and religious expression are, I admit, well made – but at this point, 55min into a 65min interview, all I can say is that he is clutching at straws. He claims that RT would be utterly ridiculed if it were allowed to freely broadcast in the UK – I strongly disagree, as I find RT to be a sober, sensible broadcasting outfit that is now my primary source of news. (I regularly read The Daily Fail alongside it, to get the Limey perspective, and good LORD but that is a ludicrous experience.)
And then JRM goes off on a tangent saying that Russian dissidents fall out of windows, rather than getting free speech. This is genuinely stupid. I personally know people who dislike and disapprove of President Putin and his government. They are free to express their opinions online, and in person. They are free to criticise President Putin himself. What they are not allowed to do, is to defame the military. Having lived in Britain and Russia, I can say from deep personal experience that you are FAR more free to speak your mind in Russia, than you are in Britain.
Listening to this interview was a truly painful and genuinely infuriating experience. I cannot quite believe that I once thought so highly of Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg. He is completely CLUELESS. And what’s worse is, he literally does not have the analytical toolkit or mental framework to understand why he is clueless.
He is the living embodiment of the meme that stupid people are blissfully ignorant about just how stupid they really are.
I will wrap up with a simple challenge.
I like Jacob Rees-Mogg – up to a point. I think – or rather, thought – that he is intelligent, articulate, impeccably stylish, and immensely knowledgeable about things related to finance, economics, Parliamentary procedure, British government mechanisms, and other things in his areas of competence.
But, for all of that, he is still nothing more than your typical clueless Tory.
Unlike Sir Jacob, when it comes to Russia, I actually do know what I am on about. I will gladly debate him on the subject of Russia – whether about its economy, or about the causes of the Banderastan War, or about the current course of that war – simply because I know what is actually going on, and he does not.
He will never do so, of course, because he has no idea who I am – nor should he. But he is clearly woefully ignorant about the things that actually matter in this world.
If he is up for the challenge, though, here it is:
When you want, Sir Jacob, you are more than welcome to engage with me on a livestream, on your channel and your home turf. You can choose the moderator. Provided you can find ways to preserve my anonymity from your absurdly authoritarian government, I would gladly educate you on any of the points you mentioned above.
It won’t happen – because I am some yutz on TEH INNARWEBZ of zero consequence, who poasts hoarse rants and pics of hawt thots, and I am not a particular fan of the Catholic Church. But it would be useful to see whether the toffs who run PommieBastardLande could ever be EDJOOMUHCAYTED on the things that they get so badly wrong about other great powers.
