OK, first things first, I know damn well this one is late too. Can’t be helped. The last few days have been just plain STUPIDLY busy, due, again, to travelling – and next week is likely to be the same, though things should settle down considerably after that. Nonetheless, life goes on, and Mondays always come back around, so let’s get on with it.
The headlines for the past week have been dominated by a bunch of hysterical panty-wetting about some sort of “Chinese spy balloon”, the precise details of which remain weird and amusing in equal parts. All I can say is that I’ve never seen such a fuss over a balloon since… well, that Pixar movie from some years back:
The sheer scale of the freakout was something to behold:
Even SNL, which is PAINFULLY unfunny these days, got in on the action:
And now we discover that the F-22 Raptor has actually scored, for the very first time, an air-to-air kill – against a balloon:
Sending up a US$300M jet to shoot down a balloon worth perhaps a couple of hundred thousand… good use of resources there…
In all seriousness, this may have been a spy balloon, but if so, the Chinese were unusually chatty about it. They went out of their way to tell the Americans it was on its way. But Uncle Shmuel massively overreacted anyway.

Reading Too Much Into Things
Your “Science is F***ING WEIRD” moment of the week is from Dawn Pine, and looks into a new intravenous material that heals wounds from the inside out:
A new biomaterial that can be injected intravenously, reduces inflammation in tissue and promotes cell and tissue repair. The biomaterial was tested and proven effective in treating tissue damage caused by heart attacks in both rodent and large animal models. Researchers also provided proof of concept in a rodent model that the biomaterial could be beneficial to patients with traumatic brain injury and pulmonary arterial hypertension.
“This biomaterial allows for treating damaged tissue from the inside out,” said Karen Christman, a professor of bioengineering at the University of California San Diego, and the lead researcher on the team that developed the material. “It’s a new approach to regenerative engineering.”
A study on the safety and efficacy of the biomaterial in human subjects could start within one to two years, Christman added. The team, which brings together bioengineers and physicians, presented their findings in the Dec. 29 issue of Nature Biomedical Engineering.
There are an estimated 785,000 new heart attack cases in the United States each year, and there is no established treatment for repairing the resulting damage to cardiac tissue. After a heart attack, scar tissue develops, which diminishes muscle function and can lead to congestive heart failure.
“Coronary artery disease, acute myocardial infarction, and congestive heart failure continue to be the most burdensome public health problems affecting our society today,” said Dr. Ryan R. Reeves, a physician in the UC San Diego Division of Cardiovascular Medicine. “As an interventional cardiologist, who treats patients with coronary artery disease and congestive heart failure on a daily basis, I would love to have another therapy to improve patient outcomes and reduce debilitating symptoms.”
In previous studies, the team led by Christman developed a hydrogel made from the natural scaffolding of cardiac muscle tissue, also known as the extracellular matrix (ECM), that can be injected into damaged heart muscle tissue via a catheter. The gel forms a scaffold in damaged areas of the heart, encouraging new cell growth and repair. Results from a successful phase 1 human clinical trial were reported in fall 2019. But because it needs to be injected directly into heart muscle, it can only be used a week or more after a heart attack — sooner would risk causing damage because of the needle-based injection procedure.
The team wanted to develop a treatment that could be administered immediately after a heart attack. This meant developing a biomaterial that could be infused into a blood vessel in the heart at the same time as other treatments such as angioplasty or a stent, or injected intravenously.
Your long read of the week is from Vladislav Ugolny, and explains the very horrible logic behind Banderastan’s relentless attacks on Donbass civilians:
Letโs take a clear example. In June 2022, the units of the first corps of the Peopleโs Militia of the DPR were dislodged from their permanent locations because of the battle for Lisichansk โ they had to storm a huge section of the front from Popasnaya to Verkhnekamenka, moving from south to north. The Russian Armed Forces then lacked personnel and had to use troops from Donetsk. Ukraine intensified strikes on the city to force the leadership to return the units back to their locations.
A similar thing is happening now. Some areas are under pressure โ in particular, the fighters of the Wagner Group are pressing in Soledar and Artyomovsk (known in Ukraine as Bakhmut). They are advancing backed by the artillery of the Russian Armed Forces. Ukrainians use civilian strikes to provoke politicians, hoping that they will influence the military and interfere with the armyโs plans. In June, this plan failed and the Ukrainians, taking advantage of the lack of counter-battery fire in the Donetsk region, committed a number of atrocities.
Commenting on the situation in a private conversation, one fighter explained why the army didn’t take the bait: โNormally, no military man โ from simple soldier to general โ suffers if the enemy attacks the city. This sounds harsh, but itโs better for the enemy to attack the city than the armyโs manpower. This would be the usual military logic, but there is one key detail: 95% of our corps are made up of local residents who are worried about their cities. So, after completing the mission in Lisichansk, our soldiers were very angry when they got back to Donetsk.โ
This is all very close to home for fighters from Donbass. In the case of a fast-paced conflict without a stable front line, such attacks would have motivated the soldiers, by enraging them. Perhaps this explains the near-complete silence of the Ukrainian artillery in the first month of the Russian military campaign. In those days, when the front line was mobile, it was better not to further motivate the enemy.
However, in positional warfare, fighters are conscious of a permanent threat to their relatives and other civilians in their hometowns. Motivated warriors who identify themselves as โdefendersโ feel as if they donโt have enough strength to break through. This acts to discourage. Concern for those who are not on the front line returns the soldier to his other life, behind the front lines, and distracts him from battle. By itself, this does not break morale, but soldiers are also affected by constant adrenaline swings, a risk of death or injury to themselves or their brothers in arms, the cold and damp conditions, the monotony of their work (for example, a good soldier digs more often than shoots), and numerous other factors.

History lessons of the week:
HALO Nation
The Act Man wonders whether HALO can even be salvaged, given the long list of departures from both Microsoft and 343i:
I agree with him that the lore and back-story of HALO has been HORRIBLY mismanaged since the Bungie days, and 343i has seriously damaged the brand equity of the franchise. They really need to stop dicking around and retconning everything to fix plot holes introduced by previous retcons, but they seem incapable of crafting a coherent story of any kind.
And now let’s watch slayergod Remy aka Mint Blitz do his thing, while talking about yet more problems with 343i:

OK, chaps, that’s all, back to work.

i’d say Saemapatch had the 1st match stolen from him, but OneFC obviously doesn’t want fighters bleeding all over. UFC would have let Saema dump a gallon of blood before they thought about stopping it.
.
of course, Rittewada wouldn’t have been given a chance to recover in the UFC either and Saema would have REALLY put Ritte out cold if he could have landed a Hendo 6′ Superman punch like what Bisping got.
Rachel Stuhlmann” does not exist.” on wikipedia LOL, so some rich duke is paying the media (UK it seems) to make his daughter/squeeze famous, she also does golf, fake tits, bad nose job, workout and has a YouTube channel with 723 subscribers & 11 vids. Interesting thing about the vids is how they are all trying to make you not see her face.
