“We are Forerunners. Guardians of all that exists. The roots of the Galaxy have grown deep under our careful tending. Where there is life, the wisdom of our countless generations has saturated the soil. Our strength is a luminous sun, towards which all intelligence blossoms… And the impervious shelter, beneath which it has prospered.”

Lost but not forgotten

Very few comedians, alive or dead, could claim to be truly versatile. Some comedians are known for having a particularly dry wit or excellent turn of phrase, but are not skilled at physical comedy. Some physical comedians are hilarious because of their ability to contort their bodies in bizarre fashion, but their actual words are not particularly funny.

And then there are some “comedians” who simply are not funny at all- I’m thinking of Dane Cook, Sarah Silverman, Chelsea Handler, Jen Kirkman, and several other especially liberal comedians whose Netflix “specials” have so befouled my account’s list of “helpful” suggestions.

And all because I actually do find Iliza Schlesinger absolutely hilarious, Netflix thinks that I find every other left-wing hack funny. Oh well.

But there was one comedian, who very sadly is no longer with us, who could do it all: Robin Williams.

Mr. Williams was taken from us way too early back in 2014, and I’ve yet to see a better tribute to the legend than the one that Terrence Popp and Blake O’Kleiner put together:

Popp argues that Mr. Williams ended his life partly because he was tired of being treated by his ex-wives and the legal system as nothing more than a wallet with legs, just as he was dealing with the onset of Parkinson’s Disease. I find this argument pretty compelling; it is very difficult to imagine just how emotionally crushing it must be to be forced, at gunpoint, to pay for not one but two bloodsucking harpies to live extravagant lives that force a man to work well into what should be his golden years of retirement.

As we go into Thanksgiving, let us all be thankful for the good things that we have in our lives- and let us also give thanks to the laughter and joy brought to us by those sadly taken from us far too soon, such as the great, and greatly missed, Robin Williams.
