Apparently even some firebrand feminists are beginning to get the message:
Perhaps most surprising, however, is
her argument that Left-wingers and feminists should make family
breakdown a key battleground rather than leave the issue to
Conservatives.In an
interview with The Guardian, she said: ‘Those of us who came of age at
the height of feminism had very mixed views about the family, since it
seemed to be defined as a heterosexual thing with a certificate,
children and mum at home.’But
she said the Left had to recognise that ‘some of the biggest public
health issues stem from family breakdown’, explaining: ‘Doctors say to
me that so many of the drug and alcohol problems they see stem from
family difficulties.’
Now this really is a case of barn door and horses. People like Diane Abbott have been at the very forefront of government policies designed specifically to destroy families. One look at the Labour Party’s “achievements” with regards to women’s rights will tell you everything you need to know.
Unfortunately, the fact that one of the West’s leading feminist politicians now (apparently) thinks that feminism has gone too far, is not in itself grounds for optimism. Politicians are not known for wit, wisdom, or good sense, and their “solutions” are often worse than the original problems. The results of both the Conservative Party’s “Big Society” and the Labour Party’s insistence on meddling with family incentives through handouts have been flatly disastrous. Today Britain’s families are falling apart and marriage rates are falling even as divorce rates are rising.
Ultimately, any feminist who claims to support “equality” between men and women, while still arguing that government needs to do more to “support families”, is being utterly disingenuous. One cannot logically argue in favour of equality and in favour of strong families. Strong families are defined by inequality- in a truly strong, stable family, there is what Athol Kay calls the “Captain-First Mate” relationship, and as Vox makes clear in that link, there is no such thing as a 50-50 marriage. You can have equality, or you can have strong families. You CANNOT have both.
