Monday morning crude awakening

Well, it is Monday, and amazingly, somehow, we managed to make it through the weekend without a Trumper Tantrum setting off a nuclear war. And actually, there are signs that, as of today, Ornj Boi is considering VERY STRONGLY!!! simply declaring victory and going home, after accomplishing basically DICK-ALL in Iran, other than killing the Grand Chief Beardy Todger, and about 170 schoolgirls.

It would appear that Donny-boy realised within the first 48 hours that he had phucked up ROYALLY, and spent the whole of the past week trying to justify his idiocy, with one genuinely retarded explanation after another. Having failed utterly to make a convincing case for launching a preemptive strike on a country that has NEVER attacked the FUSA in the last 30 years – unless you count assistance to the Iraqi insurgents, AFTER Amerikhastan launched its insane Syracuse Expedition in the Middle East and invaded Iraq – he seems to have understood that the screaming rise in oil prices spells doom for his Presidency.

So he basically said today – after talking with the Neo-Tsar in Russia, a call that Drumpf, NOT the MFIC, asked for – that he has achieved most of his aims.

This seemed to calm oil markets down significantly. Crude oil prices had rocketed up toward US$120/bbl, due to the closure of the Straits of Hormuz, and the very real likelihood of an extended shutdown of the Gulf refineries in the GCC nations, particularly in Saudi Arabia.

I have a suspicion that Drumpf was getting a lot of extremely cheesed off calls from various world leaders, telling him to back the eff off, and the stock market and interest rate signals probably convinced him that he was about to eat a turd.

This entire fiasco has been one gigantic embarrassment for the US. It has demonstrated the very real and severe limits of American power. Iran is basically unbeaten. The regime there has sustained tremendous damage – and it has survived. That was all it ever needed to do to win.

Now we shall see if the US backs off and tries to save face. If it does, we might just avoid a worldwide economic catastrophe. If it does not, though… God help us all.

In the meantime, it is worth taking some time to understand how oil markets work. Quite apart from being a fascinating subject in its own right, there are very good reasons why the different oil benchmarks operate the way they do:
