Another week dawns upon us, but I have to say, it does seem as though the cold grip of winter has finally loosened. Where I am, the temperature is rising, the sun is coming up at a reasonable hour, the days are getting longer, and there is a definite sense of spring in the air.
This comes as a blessed relief, because I for one am HEARTILY SICK of winter. (That being said, one can understand exactly why the Scandinavians make such great melodic black and death metal, given how long and insufferable their winters are.)
Today is a particularly special Monday. If you are from Eastern Europe or Central Asia, then you probably know this as the Day of the Defender of the Fatherland – a holiday inherited from the old Soviet Union, and celebrated every year in Russia as a sort of “Father’s Day” on steroids.
The Russians, of all people, understand full well what it means to honour their past. Theirs is a country literally defined by war, and especially by WWII.
So let’s get in on a little bit of that action:
