Most musicians that you watch playing on stage, generally have a lot of fun doing their thing. Perhaps the major exception was the late, great, dearly missed Neil Peart – aka “the guy who taught God how to play the drums”. We RUSH fans called him “the Professor on the drums” for a reason, because, even when he was in the middle of an epic drum solo, he looked completely serious and locked-in:
And that’s not even his best drum solo, in my personal opinion…
Anyway, the point is that you will often find drummers who goof around on-stage, but only AFTER tearing it up with their epic skills – Nicko McBrain was a great example, and a hugely influential one. I can rattle off the names of about a dozen others – Mike Portnoy, Gene Hoglan, Terry Bozzio, Dani Loeble, Mikkey Dee, and so on and so forth – who would clown around a little bit, in between their songs.
It is rare, then, to find a drummer who is BOTH a complete clown, AND a beast on the skins.
Ethan Harb is one such drummer, whose calling in life was apparently to be a comedian, but who decided instead to hit things with sticks.
His “How to get fired from a gig” series on YOOCHOOB is nothing short of an absolute laff riot. The basic idea behind them is to prank his band-mates, who all play in a cover group playing in a bar, just to throw them off and make everyone giggle.
He is very, very good at it:
The whole series is worth binge-watching, if only because of the sheer comedy value.
For your musical enjoyment on a Friday evening))
