British comedian Jonathan Pie – a man of the Left if there ever was one – has evidently broken ranks with the rest of the loonies among the Funny People (Lord, forgive me my redundancies) and decided that a smidgen of self-awareness and humility is a Good Thing:
I must admit, I am actually very surprised to see and hear a British comedian talking such sense these days. The last time I heard a British comedian who was:
a) Funny
b) Interesting
c) Sensible
d) Accurate
… well, some of my youngest readers probably weren’t even born back then. And I say that as a chap who is only in my early thirties. (For another few months, anyway, until I turn 34. Good God, what a depressing thought. I remember back when I thought that 34 was ancient.)
In all seriousness, the last time I heard sense from a British comedian was probably Rowan Atkinson. (Jeremy Clarkson doesn’t quite count, since he’s not actually a comedian, he’s just a very funny bloke who is probably the best car journalist… [long pause for dramatic effect] IN THE WORLD.)
I’m not sure what it is about celebrities in general and comedians in particular, but I suspect that most of them spout the Official Party Line of the lunatic Left because, if they don’t, they won’t find work in the industry. They know on which side their bread is buttered, and they know perfectly well that if they step out of line, they get blacklisted and banned from their professions.
Unless you are an unusually brave and strong-willed person – like, say, Owen Benjamin – and stand up for yourself and are willing to tolerate exile from the Hollywood glitterati set, then you will see your career perish in flames. Even with Jonathan Pie’s unaccountably sensible sketch above, he still had to polish it with a veneer of sneering Leftist self-righteousness in order to get it past the gatekeepers of the Bolshevik Broadcasting Corporation.
There are a few protected groups these days, to be sure. Black comedians get special privileges that do not extend to white comedians. Gay comedians get special privileges that do not extend to black or white comedians. Transgender “comedians” – I have yet to find a funny tranny, because most of them are just plain bugshit nuts – get privileges that do not extend to black, white, or gay comedians.
And so bloody on and so bloody forth.
The higher you go up the Left’s quite insane “hierarchy of oppression” – most of which is entirely imaginary – the more you realise that these people have no tolerance or capacity for humour.
The ability to be funny requires and demands that society tolerates mockery of itself and its constituents. If certain groups are suddenly off limits for mockery, then it becomes progressively (see what I did there?) harder for comedy to exist.
Real humour can be a devastating and savage weapon of mockery of established elites and their silly out-of-date views. Jonathan Pie certainly proved this in his sketch above, in which he repeatedly lampooned his own side’s utter myopia on matters concerning Trump supporters, nationalists, and the Right in general.
The reality is that the Left are now the new Puritans – dour, humourless, prone to explosive diarrhoea outrage at the drop of a cishetwhitemale’s hat, enslaved to a basically purely deterministic view of how the world works, and lacking any sense of truth or beauty.
And in order to make fun of the world in a way that is truly effective, one must, at some level, appreciate Truth – because the reality is that humour, laughter, and joy are central to all of Creation. Since the Creator who made that Creation is Truth itself, it follows immediately that He who made this Universe, also gave us the capacity to laugh, as He does, at the strangeness and flaws of the world.
The Left does not appreciate Truth, and therefore cannot appreciate humour. Truth hurts them – which of course is what it is supposed to do.
The truth is that comedy can be legitimately funny and interesting once comedians stop actively trying to piss off half of the country. It is possible to make good jokes that appeal to a broad cross-section of America, even in today’s highly polarised environment – and it can be done without resorting to endless cheap shots and wisecracks about stupid inbred rednecks, Bible-thumpers, gun nuts, and other tired old tropes.
That is why Dry Bar exists, for instance:
And that is why the Right will eventually win the war for the culture.
That’s a bold prediction given how thoroughly we have lost it so far. We have been beaten like unwanted stepchildren, repeatedly, because we refused to fight on the Left’s chosen battlegrounds. Instead we went down to Noble Defeat repeatedly, conceding ground and values with every step. Not for nothing does the Hard Right state bluntly that conservatives failed to conserve a single damned thing over the last thirty years – such as the women’s bathroom.
But, the fact is that the Left’s hammerlock over the culture is driving people away because they have no sense of humour. People don’t want to be constantly lectured and hectored about how stupid and horrible they are; they want to be entertained.
It is quite difficult to entertain someone if you are constantly worried about whether or not he – or should I say, zhe – will be offended. That is of course why the Left cannot meme, and cannot do good comedy any more.
There was a time when the Left was actually funny. There were plenty of great comedians who were liberals and Leftists. Nowadays, though, most of the funny people tend to be more on the conservative side – they are not necessarily of the Right, not exactly, but they don’t take themselves half as seriously as the po-faced Puritans of the Left do now.
Which, again, is why the Right will eventually win. We are the counterculture now. We are the cool kids. We are the rebellious ones. That is precisely why Generation Z is turning out to be the most conservative since the Greatest Generation – because they have seen how flat-out insane the Baby Boomers and especially the Shrillennials have become, but they are still young enough not be be as cynical and beaten down as Generation X.
We will get there one day, my friends. In the meantime, the Left will continue to become less and less funny or interesting, and the Right will continue to become more and more interesting.
