Did you watch Tropic Thunder a few years back? Hilarious movie, right?
Remember the fake “trailers” at the beginning of the film? Specifically, this one?
You know how it is said that life imitates art? Well, the apocalyptic (and half-arsed) predictions of Al Bore aside, it would appear that the boffins are now increasingly of the opinion that, rather than global warming being a serious problem over the next thirty years, we are all in fact in for an extended spell of frostbite:
In a little over a decade the world could be plunged into a ‘mini ice age’, scientists have warned.
Temperatures will start dropping in 2021, according to a mathematical model of the Sun’s magnetic energy.
This, they say, will lead to a phenomenon known as the ‘Maunder minimum’ – which has previously been known as a mini ice age when it hit between 1646 and 1715, even causing London‘s River Thames to freeze over.
The study says that between 2020 and 2030 solar cycles will cancel each other out.
The model of the Sun’s solar cycle is producing unprecedentedly accurate predictions of irregularities within the Sun’s 11-year heartbeat.
It draws on dynamo effects in two layers of the Sun, one close to the surface and one deep within its convection zone.
Researchers, led by maths professor Valentina Zharkova at Northumbria University, built up on previous research that predicts magnetic waves produced by the sun.
However, she has warned her model could not be used as proof of a mini ice age – in part because of global warming.
‘I hope global warning will be overridden by this effect, giving humankind and the Earth 30 years to sort out our pollution’, she told Sky News.
Okay, first things first:
As regular readers know, I am an absolute sucker for Eastern European, and especially Russian, ladies. So I figured that this Профессор Валентина Жархова of Northumbria University might be one of those stunning supermodel types that Russian media would like us to believe populate their schools and universities everywhere as lecturers and professors.
(I actually know a lady who was at one point studying for her PhD in computer science at Kharkov’s National Aviation University in Ukraine. She was a teacher or tutor of some sort there. At the age of 25, she really did look like a model. And she’s aged well too- still gorgeous years later.)
Sadly, I was extremely mistaken. Oops. That was ten minutes of wasted time…
Anyway, on to the actual contents of the article.
These findings are not much of a surprise to me, or to anyone else who is somewhat scientifically literate and sceptical of the whole silly nonsense about man-made global warming- er, climate change.
The reality is that carbon dioxide emissions have never had anything like as strong an effect on Earth’s overall temperature as the Sun. It’s simply not possible for CO2 to have that much of an impact. CO2 content in the atmosphere has gone from around 330 parts per million (ppm) to a bit over 400ppm in the space of the last 100 years. According to the greenies, this rise is UNPRECEDENTED!!! and CATASTROPHIC!!! and will lead to THE END OF CIVILISATION AS WE KNOW IT IN THIRTY YEARS!!! if we don’t DO SOMETHING!!!
Indeed I remember being told as a child in elementary school that if we did not all “go green” and “save the environment”, our world as we knew it would become a fiery Hellscape by 2020, or words to that effect.
(This was back when I was in my “Planeteers” phase. Yes, I really did have a Captain Planet ring and Planeteers badge and all the rest of that shit. In my defence- and it’s not much of one- I was much younger and dumber back then.)
Well, it’s getting nigh on to the end of 2017 now, and as far as I can tell, “the cool green hills of Earth” are still just as lovely and fresh and tree-covered as they were when I were a wee lad.
Of course, once it became clear that The Day After Tomorrow wasn’t really going to happen anytime soon, the Eco-Mafia changed their tune in an awfully big hurry and said that the world would end by 2033.
Rivers would dry up! Oceans would boil!! The ice caps would melt!!! Humans would starve and freeze!!!! Brother would be brother’s bane in an age of shattered shields and broken swords!!!!! The Fenris Wolf would break free of its chains and run wild across the Earth!!! The Fire Giants of Muspellheim would be loosed upon the final great battlefield of Vigrid’s plain and the world would burn and then drown!!!!!! The oldest and greatest of fire giants, Surtur, would blast all into burning oblivion with a single swing of his mighty-
Oh. Whoops. Wrong mythology. Sorry.
You see the point, though. The “green blob” has essentially invented a story out of whole cloth about how humanity has only a few decades left to SAVE THE WORLD!!! from imminent destruction.
In reality, the world appears to be adjusting just fine on its own to changes in its climate. It always has done so, and, barring another deep-space asteroid strike or a major nuclear war, it likely always will.
One might even argue that the Earth has some finely tuned, exceptionally well-designed feedback mechanisms for dealing with climate variations and changes in atmospheric and ocean-borne carbon dioxide levels.
However, no matter how well designed the Earth’s atmosphere, magnetosphere, and other corrective mechanisms, nothing can change the fact that it depends heavily on the Sun’s activity to maintain its temperature.
The way it works- and note that this really is Climate Science 101, extremely dumbed down and missing a LOT of fine details- goes something like this- most of which is cribbed straight from John Ringo’s The Last Centurion:
Cosmic radiation from deep-space events like gamma-ray bursts and supernovas constantly bombard the Earth. If it were not for Earth’s magnetosphere and atmosphere, in fact, life on our planet would not exist because there would be nothing to shield us from these highly energised cosmic rays, which would otherwise tear through living tissue and destroy it.
Generally speaking, the higher the level of cosmic radiation that hits the Earth, the higher the level of cloud cover that builds up due to water moisture evaporating from the seas. The higher the level of overall cloud cover, the cooler the Earth’s overall temperature. The lower the level, the higher the temperature.
The Sun’s activity plays a major part in preventing too much cosmic radiation from getting through to Earth. When the Sun’s activity is high, its own radiation shields the Earth from significant cosmic ray bombardment. One good measure of the Sun’s own output is sunspot activity; when sunspots appear in large numbers across the Sun’s surface, that means that the raging thermonuclear fusion plant that you see up there in the sky is operating properly.
But when sunspot activity drops significantly- that is when it is time to worry.
See, when sunspot activity drops during a solar cycle, that means that the Sun is going quiet. That in turn means that the Earth’s own temperature is going to drop- partly because of increased cloud cover due to higher levels of cosmic radiation hitting the Earth, and mostly because of decreased solar radiation reaching us.
(If you want the scientific backing for all of this logic, with footnotes and graphs and fancy terminology and all the rest of it, check this out.)
Obviously I am no climate scientist. Then again, judging by the abysmal track record of predictions set by the majority of the world’s credentialed “experts” on the subject, neither are most of those who do call themselves “climate scientists”.
I am simply somewhat capable of following cause and effect. And if Prof. Zhakarova’s modeling is correct- which, based on the close match between predicted and actual values, it is– then we are in for a world of trouble.
The Maunder Minimum, referenced in the article above, was a 70-year severe cold snap that severely damaged human economic activity throughout the northern hemisphere. Crops failed, rivers froze over even in countries with normally mild winters, people starved, and political instability was rife- this was right before the Treaty of Westphalia was signed in 1648, finally ending the Thirty Years’ War, but Europe’s politics would remain deeply turbulent for decades to come.
It is not difficult to extrapolate what a similar solar activity minimum would mean for us today.
Given that the world now has over 7 billion people, and that the vast majority of future population growth is going to come from India and Africa- where it is especially difficult in the latter case to feed the population even at current levels- that does not bode well for future economic activity and growth.
The record of human civilisation is absolutely clear on this front: humanity thrives in warm climates and suffers in cold ones.
The record of storm activity also tells us that, contrary to what warmists want us to believe, the worst and most violent storms occur during cold periods, not warm ones.
All of this adds up to a very nasty scenario for everyone if global cooling regimes set in over the next twenty years- and most of what I have seen on this subject indicates that this is exactly what is going to happen.
Yet, for the last thirty years, we have had to put up with a near-constant drumbeat of so-called scientific “consensus” telling us that global warming is the problem, and that Mankind’s own rapid advancement from digging in the dirt to walking on the Moon is the root cause.
We’ve been hearing this sort of nonsense again, and again, and again- and again- from people with advanced degrees who could not find a coconut on Coconut Island, to steal a rather delightful phrase. Perhaps it is about time that we stopped listening to a bunch of climate “scientists”, who cannot accurately model the past, let alone predict the future properly, and start listening to some mathematicians, who do not have the luxury of bullshitting their way out of trouble when their models fail to match reality.
