“We are Forerunners. Guardians of all that exists. The roots of the Galaxy have grown deep under our careful tending. Where there is life, the wisdom of our countless generations has saturated the soil. Our strength is a luminous sun, towards which all intelligence blossoms… And the impervious shelter, beneath which it has prospered.”

Monday morning celebritard deathmatches

by | Oct 16, 2023 | Mondays | 1 comment

Ugh, Monday. Again. This particular Monday finds me on the road, for a full 4 days of the week – and I cannot claim to be happy about it, in the slightest. Travelling for business is HUGELY overrated – the only good thing one can say about it is, you don’t have to pay for it. But you do end up spending A LOT of time in crap towns.

And that is before we get to the realities of waking up at stupid-o’clock, just to catch the relevant train or plane, which, if you live in much of the West these days, often as not is late, crowded, smelly, and/or rather uncomfortable.

Still and all, moaning about it isn’t going to make this day go away. The Great Mondaydact Browser Mulcher, on the other hand, WILL.

Today we delve into the celebrity boxing matches that took place over the weekend, to the great detriment of the “sweet science” of boxing. Here is a look at the fight between Logan Paul and Dillon Dannis, which was… well, GARBAGE:

All I can say is, that fight was a disgrace to the art of boxing.

I am not a professional boxer – I am not even an amateur one. But I did train with a teacher who DEMANDED we learn the absolute fundamentals of striking, to a very high degree. It was only after I left that school (and the FUSA) and saw how sloppily most kickboxing and karate instructors teach kicks and punches, that I realised what I great gift I had received.

This is the big problem with celebrity fights. You see appalling technique on the stage, between two idiots who really don’t know what they are doing – yet that is the reality of modern boxing. It is all about the money, not the development of the art.

Witness what happened when Ben Askren faced off against Jake Paul – the other brother of this infamous duo:

Or the time that Logan Paul took on none other than Floyd Mayweather Jr.:

That result should not have surprised anyone. Boxing is in fact a highly specialised fighting art, which MMA fans disparage far too often as “simplistic” – it is anything but.

I remember sitting in an Irish bar watching Mayweather take on Conor Macgregor in their boxing fight, and i remember the Irish fans saying Conor had a chance. I knew they were wrong within about the first two rounds. Floyd had absolutely zero respect for Conor’s power, and simply walked straight through most of his opponent’s shots.

Why is that? If you look back at the history of MMA fighters taking on boxers, in boxing matches, why do the MMA guys lose so consistently, even though boxing is one of the Four Pillars of MMA? (The other three being: muay thai, wrestling, and Brazilian jiu jitsu.)

The answer has to do with the fact that boxing emphasises a very different set of movements and techniques than MMA does. It is precisely because MMA has more options, and more room for innovation and movement, and completely different rules, that MMA fighters struggle.

To put it another way, an MMA fighter is like a GP doctor – he has to study every discipline of the fighting arts, at a relatively high level, even if his preference might be in a specific area. A boxer, on the other hand, is like a neurosurgeon, or an anaesthesiologist – he specialises in oe very particlar area of fighting, and gets really, really good at that one thing.

A neurosurgeon can do what a GP does – badly. A GP cannot do what a neurosurgeon does.

It is very roughly the same with MMA versus boxing. Put a boxer into an MMA fight, where he can be taken down and choked out, or where he can get his legs kicked out from under him, or where he can be kicked, full stop, and he will lose. Conversely, put an MMA fighter, who is used to wearing 4oz gloves in a cage, into a ring with 12oz gloves and unable to utilise his full striking and grappling arsenal, and of course, he will lose.

That is precisely what we saw in the Macgregor-Mayweather fight too:

Macgregor resorted to those rabbit-punches, because that was what he knew to do in that situation. Mayweather simply grinned, shrugged them off, outlasted Macgregor, and came back and beat the shit out of him.

All of that is entertaining – sort of – but it is not good for the sport of boxing. If the entire sport depends on celebrity idiots fighting for big purses, then that sends a very clear message to boxing gyms everywhere – do not focus on fundamentals of striking or creating future high-quality strikers, but focus instead on booking celebrities who are willing to risk brain damage for a chance at being famous.

This is very, very bad for the future of the sport. It means we will no longer see great fights like these:

And that, to me, at least, as someone who appreciates the high-level strategy and thinking that goes into real fighting, is a rather sad thing.

Dawn of Battle

The Male Brain has assembled a great collection of entertainment for us this week – despite everything happening over in his patch of the world. We start with an excellent video from Moon, explaining why Gen-Z is essentially checking out of society:

Ryan George comes along to break down the Pitch Meeting for Wrath of the Titans:

I saw that movie – it wasn’t great, to be sure, but it was not nearly as terrible as most people think.

Then again, my taste in movies is poor at the best of times – as I have stated repeatedly – so my opinion on the subject is probably not worth much. (Of course, as I also have stated repeatedly, my taste in music is exquisite.)

Moving on – PsyHacks explains how modren wammenzes are making society polygamous, which runs completely counter to the way things should be for social stability:

In Dawn Pine’s words:

  1. Can totally confirm (I’m not on the 10% but above average)
  2. His idea is so naive and counter the zeitgeist that for sure won’t be adapted.
  3. Conclusion: social upheaval on the horizon

Honest Ads (aka Cracked) looks at the realities of “organic” foods:

Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell tries to explain the origins of life, by appealing to evolutionary biology:

Amusing, is it not, to see scientists desperately trying to avoid the notion of an intelligent designer and Creator, by appealing to time as the solution to their problem.

Of course, if they could actually do the MAFF, they would recognise that time is the problem, not the solution.

Mark Dice takes perhaps the only sensible stance on the whole Israel-Palestine thing – one of pointing out the hypocrisy and evil of BOTH sides, and telling the rest of the world to stay the hell out of it:

Lord Razor of the Fist Clan offers up a similar, but unique, and uniquely profane, take on the same situation:

As does PJW:

Rulings from the Bench

Judge Nap has been extremely busy finding talking heads to discuss the very crazy developments of the week just past. We begin, as usual, with Col. Douglas Macgregor, discussing the ability of the FUSA to support a two-front war:

LTC Tony Shaffer notes that Israel is now at the front of the line for weapons and nonsense from the New Evil Empire, pushing Ukraine aside in peremptory fashion:

Maj. Scott Ritter REALLY does not like Benjamin Netanyahu – I cannot comment on whether he is right or wrong, but of course, Maj. Ritter has a lot of experience in dealing with such people:

Alistair Crooke sounds the alarm over the Israeli “overreaction”, as he calls it – with, I think, considerable merit – and the trap Israel now finds itself fighting through:

Larry Johnson and Ray McGovern provide the perspective of intelligence professionals on the whole conflict – and neither of them have anything kind to say about Netanyahu, either:

Dr. Phil Giraldi looks at the deeper origins of the current phase of the conflict – he is of the view that Netanyahu and the Mossad knew 9/11 was coming, and deliberately hid that information from the FUSA to ensure the once-greatest country on Earth would bind itself ever closer to Israel:

Matthew Hoh does not hold back on the subject of Israeli and Palestinian war crimes in the ongoing conflict:

Prof. John Mearsheimer also provides his own perspective on the origins of the conflict, as an academic:

Another high-profile academic, Prof. Jeffrey Sachs, looks at the links between the conflicts going on around the world:

I will add some major points that all of these academics seem to miss.

First: the Palestinians are COMPLETELY AGREEMENT NON-CAPABLE.

They have rejected every single peace settlement ever proposed. They have refused to come to the table, recognising current realities, opting always and everywhere for maximalist solutions that are totally unworkable.

These people insist on and demand the return to the pre-1967 borders, failing to recognise the political impossibility of this for Israel. It will never happen. Not only does Israel have too many settlements and settlers in the West Bank to permit this, but the pre-1967 version of Israel was then and is today completely unsustainable.

Moreover, none of the academics – and far too few of the independent observers – are willing to point out the duplicity of the Arabs, in general. You cannot trust these people (with the exception of Arab Christians – of which there are very few). They come from a culture and a religion where lying is literally a way of life, and is entirely permissible when the ummah is weak, as a way to buy time. The Arabs will happily break any pact, any agreement, if it suits them. They are an extremely low-trust people with a totally tribalist mindset.

Worst of all, no one seems to put any blame on the Arab states around Israel for keeping the Pali-Walis locked up like animals in the world’s largest open-air prison. Israel justifiably gets a lot of blame for this. The standard counter to this line of argument is the fact that Israel supplies free power, water, and internet to the inhabitants of Gaza – which is exactly the same set of privileges that inmates get at San Quentin, or Broadmoor.

But, the fact is that Egypt administered the Gaza Strip up until 1967. The fact is the people of the West Bank are effectively Jordanians. The fact is that the people of the Golan Heights are effectively Lebanese and Syrians.

Yet NONE of these supposedly “brotherly” Arab nations want anything to do with the Pali-Walis. Why? Because those people are useful political pawns and tools – NOTHING MORE. The Arab leaders of the rest of the region will weep copious amounts of crocodile tears if Israel goes about carrying out an Endlosung on Gaza – and that will get their subjects all riled up good and proper – but they will not lift even a finger to actually help those Arabs.

All of that is BEFORE we get to the ridiculous impracticality of a “two-state solution”. Has anyone looked at a map of where Gaza and the West Bank are? You cannot operate a country split in half. It just does not work. I invite anyone who thinks it does, to look at the history of Pakistan and East Pakistan – known today as Bangladesh.

The bottom line here is that there are no “good guys” in this conflict. Let us be very clear about this. The best course of action is simply to let Israel and Palestine settle this themselves – and everyone else should stay the hell out of it, unless someone comes to the table prepared to recognise that the New Palestinians and the Old Palestinians will eventually seek to exterminate each other, root and branch, and that the establishment of a “Palestinian” state, which never existed before beyond the kingdoms of Israel and Judah, will not solve the long-term demographic trends and problems.

FoodNerd discusses something called Advanced Glycation End-Products with Dr. David Turner and the impacts they have on cancers:

The tl;dw version of this comes down to this:

AGEs are by-products from metabolising sugars, which build up in our bodies. We can tolerate it to some extent, but our modern lifestyles, which are heavy in processed foods and extra sugars and are low on exercise, overload our systems with this stuff. That results in faster ageing, and much higher incidences of cancers, than we have seen in our past.

So, basically – eat a diet high in natural, simple, fresh food, with lots of vegetables and meat, cut out the processed crap and carbs, and get plenty of exercise and sunshine.

Which is to say – live like I have for the past 12 years.

The Drinker watched the new woke take on Robin Hood, from, of all people, the Canuckistanis, so you don’t have to:

As I pointed out in a comment to that video, the title of the show, Robyn Hood, is unintentionally hilarious, because it tells you everything you need to know. It is essentially all about Wakandans and Dindus Robbin’ You ‘N’ da Hood.

Clever, eh?

Also – Canuckistan has a LOT to apologise for, now. They inflicted Justine “Castro’s Bastard” Truvada on us, and now this abomination too. For shame, Canada – FOR SHAME…

Reading Too Much Into Things

Your “Science is F***ING WEIRD” moment of the week is from The Male Brain, and looks at how researchers at Tel Aviv University have figured out how to create micro-robots that can manipulate and examine matter at the cellular level:

Researchers at Tel Aviv University have developed a hybrid micro-robot, the size of a single biological cell (about 10 microns across), that can be controlled and navigated using two different mechanisms — electric and magnetic. The micro-robot is able to navigate between different cells in a biological sample, distinguish between different types of cells, identify whether they are healthy or dying, and then transport the desired cell for further study, such as genetic analysis. The micro-robot can also transfect a drug and/or gene into the captured targeted single cell. According to the researchers, the development may help promote research in the important field of ‘single cell analysis’, as well as find use in medical diagnosis, drug transport and screening, surgery, and environmental protection.

The innovative technology was developed by Prof. Gilad Yossifon from the School of Mechanical Engineering and Department of Biomedical Engineering at Tel Aviv University and his team: Post-doctoral researcher Dr. Yue Wu and student Sivan Yakov, in collaboration with Dr. Afu Fu, Post-doctoral researcher, from the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology. The research was published in the journal Advanced Science.

Prof. Gilad Yossifon explains that micro-robots (sometimes called micro-motors or active particles) are tiny synthetic particles the size of a biological cell, which can move from place to place and perform various actions (for example: collection of synthetic or biological cargo) autonomously or through external control by an operator. According to Prof. Yossifon, “developing the micro-robot’s ability to move autonomously was inspired by biological micro-swimmers, such as bacteria and sperm cells. This is an innovative area of research that is developing rapidly, with a wide variety of uses in fields such as medicine and the environment, as well as a research tool.”

As a demonstration of the capabilities of the micro-robot the researchers used it to capture single blood and cancer cells and a single bacterium, and showed that it is able to distinguish between cells with different levels of viability, such as a healthy cell, a cell damaged by a drug, or a cell that is dying or dying in a natural ‘suicide’ process (such a distinction may be significant, for example, when developing anti-cancer drugs). After identifying the desired cell, the micro-robot captured it and moved the cell to where it could be further analyzed. Another important innovation is the ability of the micro-robot to identify target cells that are not labeled — the micro-robot identifies the type of cell and its condition (such as degree of health) using a built-in sensing mechanism based on the cell’s unique electrical properties.

Here is a video that explains it all:

As Dawn Pine pointed out, this kind of brings to mind the classic 1987 film, Innerspace:

Your long read of the week is an article by Maj. Scott Ritter, explaining how and why Israel’s much-vaunted intelligence services completely failed to see the Oct 07 attack coming:

But perhaps the largest source of the Israeli intelligence failure regarding Hamas was the over reliance Israel put on intelligence collection and analysis itself. Gaza and Hamas have been a thorn in the side of Israel for years, and as such have attracted the overwhelming attention of the Israeli intelligence and security services.

Israel has perfected the art of human intelligence against the Hamas target, with a proven track record of placing agents deep inside the Hamas decision-making hierarchy.

Unit 8200 likewise has spent billions of dollars creating intelligence collection capabilities which vacuum up every piece of digital data coming out of Gaza — cell phone calls, e-mails, and SMS texting. Gaza is the most photographed place on the planet, and between satellite imagery, drones, and CCTV, every square meter of Gaza is estimated to be imaged every 10 minutes.

This amount of data is overwhelming for standard analysis techniques relying on the human mind. To compensate for this, Israel developed a huge artificial intelligence (AI) capability which it then weaponized against Hamas in the short but deadly 11-day conflict with Hamas in 2021, named Guardian of the Walls.

Unit 8200 developed several unique algorithms which used immense databases derived from years of raw intelligence data collected from every possible source of information.

Building upon concepts of machine learning and algorithm-driven warfare that have been at the forefront of Israeli military research and development for decades, Israeli intelligence was able to use AI to not only select targets, but also to anticipate Hamas actions.

This ability to predict the future, so to speak, helped shape Israeli assessments about Hamas’s intent in the lead up to the 2023 Yom Kippur attacks.

Israel’s fatal mistake was to openly brag about the role AI played in Operation Guardian of the Walls. Hamas was apparently able to take control of the flow of information being collected by Israel.

There has been much speculation about Hamas “going dark” regarding cell phone and computer usage to deny Israel the data that is contained in those means of communication. But “going dark” would have, by itself, been an intelligence indicator, one that AI would have certainly picked up.

Instead, it’s highly probable that Hamas maintained an elaborate communications deception plan, maintaining a level of communications sufficient in quantity and quality to avoid being singled out by AI — and by Israeli analysts deviating from the norm.

In the same way, Hamas would likely have maintained its physical profile of movement and activity to keep the Israeli AI algorithms satisfied that nothing strange was afoot.

This also meant any activity — such as training related to paragliding or amphibious operations — that might be detected and flagged by Israeli AI was done to avoid detection.

The Israelis had become prisoners of their own successes in intelligence collection.

By producing more data than standard human-based analytical methodologies could handle, the Israelis turned to AI for assistance and, because of the success of AI during the 2021 operations against Gaza, developed an over reliance upon the computer-based algorithms for operational and analytical purposes.

Just Bleed!!!

Here is a superb retrospective from VoteSport on Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva:

It is worth pointing out, however, that Vandy and the rest of his top-talent generation, during the days of PRIDE, fought in an era when the contracts literally said “we do not test for anabolic steroids”. And Vandy literally ran out of the gym when testers came to check on his samples before UFC 175.

Put simply, a lot of the most dangerous and terrifying guys from back then – Alistair Overeem, Mirko “CroCop” Filipovic, Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort, and so on – probably, and in the first and last cases, CERTAINLY, were on good old Vitamin S.

This is why the physiques from back then were so gigantic. In today’s UFC and Bellator championships, even the heavyweights are much more slimmed-down. Those roid-wars are (mostly) a thing of the past now.

If you still want that sort of thing, you have to go to Poland’s KSW promotion, where you still get these crazy big dudes swinging heavy leather at each other.

OK, that’s all, get back to work now, boys.
