Today is, of course, International Women’s Day, which is almost a complete non-event in the Western world, but is a REALLY BIG FRACKIN’ DEAL in Eastern Europe. The interesting thing about that lot is, they don’t really care all that much about Valentine’s Day – which is the day all of us men dread, because it makes a mockery out of real love and affection.
But they seriously care about IWD.
This is the day when Eastern European men are expected to give their ladies special gifts – usually bouquets of flowers and similar “pretty” and “nice-smelling” things. (Don’t ask me what “nice-smelling” means. As far as I’m concerned, provided it smells somewhat better than a humid armpit, it’s probably fine – whatever “it” happens to be, as a general rule.)
Pro-tip, though, boys: if you ever date an Eastern European woman (and, having done so, I assure you, I am in prime position to give this advice), be aware that the value of the gift is not necessarily the point. It is the thoughtfulness that goes into it, which matters.
That being said – do not, under ANY circumstances, give an Eastern European woman a bouquet of flowers with an even number of whatsits.
The reason why, has something to do with ancient superstitions about how an even number of flowers signifies death. So, just don’t do it. Flower shops in Russia, for instance, will make damned sure you DON’T order an even number of flowers, just to spare you some blushes.
Here endeth the lesson, and the cultural enrichment. It’s been a damned long week, and a very busy (but productive) one, so let’s get straight to the good stuff.
And, given this is a holiday celebrated heavily in Russia (and most of the FSU nations), it is only fitting that the place of honour goes to a lady from those parts.
This here is Anna Rybalko (Анна Рыбалко), age 20, from Rostov-on-Don, which has a reputation for being home to the most beautiful women in the country. Given her looks, it is difficult to disagree. She was one of the top 10 finalists in the 2022 Miss Russia pageant – don’t ask me what that is all about, I cannot pretend to be arsed – and is now studying at the very prestigious Mikhail Lomonosov Moscow State University (Московский Государственный Университет Имени М. В. Ломоносова, for the technically minded), to become a journalist.
Given my extremely venomous disdain for “journalists”, one might wonder why I am inclined to treat this particular lady with courtesy. The answer is simple. Western whorenalists deserve a lot worse than mere contempt. Other countries, however, at least try to create journalists that stick to facts and objective reality – though, admittedly, it is difficult to understand that reality, when journalism school does not actually teach serious science and mathematics.
Also, she appears to be very much engaged, and good for her.
Anyway, happy Friday, everyone, and for our friends who ARE, in fact, involved with Eastern European women… good luck dealing with today’s extortionate flower and chocolate prices.
