Monday morning song of freedom

Today is a holiday Monday for many – including myself, and including the heathen rebel colonials who insist on spelling everything incorrectly and using those ridiculous imperial units of theirs. But it is a particularly special kind of holiday Over There. Today is Memorial Day, and it is special precisely because it is the day of the year when Americans remember those who died for their country:

Of course, I would be remiss if I did not add a certain perspective to this.

As Grandpa Grumpuss and many other Russians have repeatedly pointed out, NO American who fought under the American flag in the past 100 years has ever died fighting for his home, family, and land. Every such American died fighting for a war started by his government, or by foreign governments, to defend other people’s lands. The hard truth is that Americans today simply do not know what it is like to fight for one’s own nation, ideals, identity, and values, against enemies truly determined to destroy all of those things.

The Russians DO know what that is like. That is why they have great personal sympathy for what America is going through right now. They understand, as only they can, what awaits America at the collapse of its empire. And they know, with a certain amount of Slavic fatalism, that America is not ready to face what the Russians went through.

Be that as it may… let the dead rest in honour and peace.
