“We are Forerunners. Guardians of all that exists. The roots of the Galaxy have grown deep under our careful tending. Where there is life, the wisdom of our countless generations has saturated the soil. Our strength is a luminous sun, towards which all intelligence blossoms… And the impervious shelter, beneath which it has prospered.”

Friday T&A: Queen’s Gambit Edition

Another busy week, and another cold one – winter is definitely setting in. The cold, though, by itself, is not really the problem. The real issue is when it is wet and damp outside – and stays that way, without sunshine. That damp seeps its way into everything, and makes the day far more cold and miserable than it really is based on pure temperature alone.

The only remedy for this, that makes any sense to my mind, is a roaring fireplace. Unfortunately, in the West, we no longer build houses that accommodate fireplaces easily, because reasons – usually to do with endless Green retardery – even in countries with abundant lumber supplies.

The result is that Westerners have to shiver and shake and make do with space heaters and electric radiators, which generally don’t work very well.

That is how it seems to me, at least.

Anyway, my own ranting aside, let us get to the lovely lady of the week.

This here is Anastasiya Bers (Анастасия Берс), age unknown, from Chelyabinsk in the Ural mountains of Mordor. She apparently has been modelling for a while now, and moved from the south Urals to Moscow. She got her shot at fame after appearing in a music video for some Russian singer, and based on that, moved to Dubai, where she runs some sort of high-end chess club.

Heck if I know what that means, but those of you who have watched The Queen’s Gambit on Netherflix will understand that chess (or Шахмат – “shakhmat”, aka “checkmate” – as they call it, taking the name from the original Persian) is a very big deal in Russia.

That is an excellent series, by the way – definitely recommended. Anya Taylor-Joy is a genuinely good actress, and she shows what she can do.

As for Nastya here – is she any good at chess herself? No idea. She’s almost certainly better than me, which is not saying much, of course.

Happy weekend, lads.
