Rather than blatantly ripping off borrowing from friend and reader Last Redoubt’s Girl Friday concept- go check out the impressive collection of what the old-timers used to call “bodacious babes” over at his place- I decided to go out and find some chick-fronted rock and metal that is actually worth listening to.
All entries come from KOBRA AND THE LOTUS, which is one of my favourite “new” bands- they’ve actually been around for at least 4-5 years. I’ve seen these guys play live, and they are excellent– but, to my considerable amusement, Brittany “Kobra” Paige is actually a runt. Seriously, she’s tiny, you could pick her up and put her in your pocket.
And, trust me, you’d want to. She’s really cute.
It also helps that she actually can, in fact, sing live without the need for auto-tuning, unlike some female metal frontwomen out there. (*cough* Tarja Turunen *cough*)
And a few more, from back when Kobra Paige sang in a very different style:
Ah, but I’ve saved the best for last:
… Wow. I think I’m in love.
And she ain’t even Russian- how about that?!

It's nice to hear a cover that actually stays true to the original. She did "Black Velvet" justice.
Wasn’t aware that Tarja used autotune. Makes the band finding other singers, especially given the stylistic straight jacket her “operatic” style put the music , make even more sense.
Oh Jesus. The first couple singers were pretty decent live but Tarja couldn’t hit a not win that live clip to save her life, off enough to make my ears hurt.
Yeah. Tarja sounds great in the studio, but she has a tough time reproducing that same quality live on stage.
I do not know for sure whether her voice was extensively processed through autotune during the studio albums- they do not sound like they were. However, given what she sounds like live- i.e. a bit like a strangled cat at times- I'd say that she was probably getting at least some form of artificial help to smooth out her voice.
Fortunately Floor Jansen has NO such issues- she sounds incredible no matter what the material is. To my mind she is the best female metal singer out there today.
