For the record – my attitude toward Bibles is: “just get one”. My personal preference is the ESV for everyday use, but any of the following will do very well indeed:
– KJV and NKJV
– NET (for really serious Bible study, due to the sheer quantity of translator notes)
– NASB
– Douay-Rheims

I’m not fond of the NIV, because I think it sacrifices textual accuracy for readability, but it’s fine if you have nothing else. More “liberal” translations, such at the NLT and a few others, are decent but not great.

I have no opinion one way or another about Bible translations that are specific to either the Catholic or Orthodox traditions. I respect both greatly and do not care to weigh in about their particular Biblical textual peculiarities, if any.

My view is that one should have at least one “modern” translation, e.g. the ESV, and one “old-school” translation, like the KJV or Douay-Rheims. This provides for a nice contrast between modern readability and old-school literal fidelity. Serious Bible students will definitely need the NET and a big notebook to jot down thoughts and ideas.

There are several translations to avoid like the Plague, and all of them should have been burned for blasphemy by now – the Schofield Bible, the Passion Translation, and the Mirror Bible, to name a few.
