Like, I started up a new Infinite campaign with two buddies who stopped playing at H3, and my explanation went something like “so in H4 you kill the last Forerunner and Cortana dies, in H5 she comes back evil and takes over the galaxy with a bunch of other AIs and killer robots, and at the beginning of Infinite I guess that’s all over and didn’t matter because you’re now fighting with these Banished guys who are somehow powerful enough to mess up humanity’s best weapons and take over a new Halo ring.”

All the Imperial troops and officers in Star Wars are white guys for example, or the Ewoks are actually stand-ins for the Viet Cong. Once Trump got elected, Hollywood decided that they didn’t need to be subtle anymore. The American people were no longer an audience to be entertained and won over. They were dumb jackoff hicks who voted for the Pussy Grabber over the First Female President, and thus needed to be relentlessly propagandized, preached at, and re-educated until they learned the error of their ways. MeToo blowing up a year later poured gasoline on that fire and strapped it to a jet engine (which is why we got so many insufferable girlboss movies and shows for the past decade) and the Saint Floyd riots in 2020 are what’s driving all of the woke failure video games currently destroying AAA.

It’s remarkably similar to what happened to “mainstream media” once Fox News blew up in the 00’s. ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, etc. collectively decided that there was no longer any need to maintain the appearance that they were “fair and balanced” since there was an evil right-wing network that had to be destroyed at all costs. Never mind that all Fox really did was entertain the idea that the right may have a point, vs. the MSM whose idea of “balance” was to have a flaming sh!tlib on one side and a slightly less flaming sh!tlib on the other as the “right wing” guest.

The funny thing about both situations is that both the Hollywood and the MSM had the attitude of “you’ll watch what we make because you have no choice,” as though we still lived in the 70’s where there were 3 channels on TV and maybe 2 or 3 movies to pick from at the theater. They’re learning the very painful lesson now that getting and keeping an audience is a much better long-term play than taking ESG money to “force behaviors.”

Microsoft on the other hand is always late to the party – to quote Charlie Demerjian they “missed the internet revolution entirely but crushed Netscape without trying too hard” – so I get why they’re going all-in on woke DEI BS now at a time when everyone else is moving away from it.

The worst thing about Halo is that, similar to Metroid after Fusion, 343 has done such incredible violence to the canon that it’s now effectively impossible to continue making sequels in that universe. Hence why we’re getting a second reboot of CE instead of a new post-Infinite game.
