100% agreed - I've read those books as well, they are very good. But there is a LOT of dreck within the expanded universe literature.

The first three books in Black Library's Horus Heresy series (Horus Rising, False Gods, Galaxy in Flames) are not only excellent 40K books, but excellent sci-fi books, period. You'd never expect the backstory of a game about painted dolls fighting to not only be profound, but moving as well. Highly, highly recommended.

It's a shame that BL decided to drown that series in so many pointless spinoffs that I completely lost interest.
