10 Unfriendly Alien first contacts: He talks about gamma radiation bursts happening all over the sky without apparent astronomical origins. Then speculates that could be a nuclear weapons signature or a termination of a warp drive event releasing gamma radiation on returning to space/time and/or slowing down to sublight speed… either one of these is fascinating.

If you have a warp drive starship capable of withstanding the bowshock of a warp termination, and you have a sufficiently sized vessel, you can warp into a system, blast a moon into oblivion to declare yourself, then warp back out. If you get into a war, just warp close enough to the civilizations living quarters (planet, moon, asteroid, etc) and gamma bowshock it into oblivion.

If someone else has a similar tech, they can do the same to you. The Mutually Assured Destruction component of warp-gamma-blasting systems into oblivion would eliminate interstellar trade. You wouldn’t have just anyone warping a ship from your space into some other system, because if they screw up they drive both systems to extinction. Maybe you could tolerate ships landing outside the Oort clouds and coming in at sublight for years within the system, but that’s still high risk.

In summary, under gamma-bowshock conditions, planetary nationalism and mercantilism are the right play.

Idiocracy, the movie, is a worthy focus for a Monday browser buster. It is art of the highest form, it is growing more true and relevant with time.

This NY Post headline from the links is simply wonderful:
“Cops, surgeons and homemakers are the worst spouses, alleged lawyer says”
Alleged Lawyer is a term we should use more frequently.
