There’s a theory that you can tell who is in charge by noting whom you cannot offend. It’s not as good or as accurate a method as noting who must be lied to.

America is an unusual place. Everywhere has its ruling class. Our apparent ruling class isn’t a lot different from theirs, the filthy fucking swine; guillotine bait to a man, woman, child, and gender indeterminate. But our apparent ruling class is not our actual ruling class. You can see our actual ruling class – the folks who must be lied to and the folks Obama noted as clinging to God and their guns – when the apparent ruling class gets out of hand. Then we put someone like Reagan or Trump in office. And probably really did last year, and will again.
