Apparently so. Unlike the F-22, it isn’t so precious that it cannot be thrown into actual combat – and unlike the F-35, it’s actually a proven battle-tested bomber that can fly low and slow enough to provide genuine stealthy troop support.

Also, governments around the world are placing orders on the f35, so maybe it’s not so useless, or Lockheed knows how to do some clever marketing.

It’s the second one, for sure. Lockheed’s marketing department is great. Also, don’t forget that the F-35 is possibly the biggest and most complex jobs bank programme in the entire world. Any country that signs on for the F-35 may well get involved in the manufacturing process, which means JOBS during a time of massive global recession.

The Russians and the Chinese seem unimpressed.

Yep. The Chinese and especially the Russians have long-wave mobile radar platforms that can detect pretty much every stealth aircraft ever made. And the Russians already have a fighter that is probably almost as good as the F-35. Their major deficiency right now is in engine technology, which doesn’t permit them to use supercruise features. But otherwise, the Su-50 appears to be a real contender against the F-35 – at less than half the price, too.

As for the Chinese – well, they can’t rip off the F-35 very well, not anymore, but they’ve given it their best shot with the J-20 Chengdu. It looks like someone described an F-35 (or, more accurately, a smaller and sort of wonky F-22) down the phone in broken English that was then literally translated into Chinese. The thing does fly and does work. But I don’t think the Chinese are worried by the F-35 given the turducken plane’s well-documented reliability and performance issues.
