I watched a documentary on Netflix looking at the Shroud of Turin in which they put forth a pretty compelling theory about how the thing could have been faked, using an ancient form of photography. I don't take a strong position either way on the subject; if it's a fake, that alone doesn't shake my faith in Jesus, and if it's real, well, then that is pretty astonishing proof of God's power.

The manner treatment of those being crucified was part of a book I read where they were explaining the Shroud of Turin. Try as they may they can't explain how that image got there (they carbon dated a repair section initially, it's actually of the period). The can't explain how this guy was clearly crucified, yet did not have his legs broken. He also had damage from a crown of thorns, something that the author said they wouldn't have done, usually. Their death was going to be painful and humiliating enough. The Romans wouldn't have added to it further.
