Well, there's an old joke concerning republics: "God created two republics on Earth - Switzerland, to show everyone how it could be done, and America, as a warning to Mankind". I'd say that's about right, especially these days.

Of course, that aphorism smoothly elides over the sheer amount of carnage, slaughter, and misery that the Helvetii and other "Swiss" tribes inflicted upon each other to get to the point that they could live together in peace as a federated republic.

Look I know there is no perfect government or system but we need people in charge who are at the very least responsible and know their actions will be remembered.

Correct. Distilled down from all of the nonsense and bullshit, what you are seeing today with democracies failing around the world is a disconnect between authority and responsibility.

There is a brilliant quote from Robert Heinlein's STARSHIP TROOPERS that illustrates this point:

"Both for practical reasons and for mathematically verifiable moral reasons, authority and responsibility must be equal - else a balancing takes place as surely as current flows between points of unequal potential. To permit irresponsible authority is to sow disaster; to hold a man responsible for anything he does not control is to behave with blind idiocy. The unlimited democracies were unstable because their citizens were not responsible for the fashion in which they exerted their sovereign authority... other than through the tragic logic of history."

That's from one of the classroom lessons in History and Moral Philosophy in the book. It's my go-to quote that explains why human governments tend to fail.

I don't ignore it. Back during during the Segregation Era, it was certainly true that Blacks had the highest rates of in-wedlock births, marriages, and church attendance of any racial group in the USA. It was ALSO true that their communities suffered from much higher crime rates than White communities did. That's always been the case and always will be.

We were just pulling your leg. I actually like that you think about the question in detail and want to give a reasonable response. Some questions need that, just reacting as most people do will unfortunately only give short term solutions (if you can even called it a solution) which passes the problems (or as they say pass the buck) off to the future.

This is why I think (modern) Democracy and Republics in general fails. It relays on someone in for 4 years (8 if they get elected again) who is elected by the public. Since everyone (bar the kids) can vote, you get the people who are like Obama. Look I know there is no perfect government or system but we need people in charge who are at the very least responsible and know their actions will be remembered.

"... let them do so, in peace and with no hard feelings ..."

There are a few places where this works, such as some of the Caribbean island countries.

But you can't ignore such things as the crime rate of the Bahamas being higher than that of the US.

Intentional homicide rate: Ranked 8th. 8 times more than the United States.

If people can't go in peace, they should just go.
