The worst thing about the Vietnam conflict was not the war itself, or the communism that flourished in the US behind it, or the political motivations for the war, or even for the hatred and derision heaped upon the poor soldiers that endured it.

It was not even the conscription... conscription is a debt we pay for a free and safe country.

It was conscription for a FOREIGN war. One that affected us not in the slightest. It was turning the proudest and greatest military in the world into a slave army. It destroyed, probably forever, the incredible espri de corps that won so many wars. Arguably, since that time, we have not only never recaptured it, but we have also never WON a war... I honestly believe that we may be incapable of winning a war.

The Military became a prison for those not clever enough to escape the grinder... and like 9/11, it has inescapably and irrevocably destroyed the American military psyche, possibly for all time.

I have had at least two male forebears die in every single American war, as well as losing two uncles at that time. (west virginia, you know) And thankfully have escaped that fate (so far) myself, but that was when volunteering lost it's shine, and since Vietnam few of us freedom-loving Hillbillies have chosen to serve.

I think that Faith will only return when America starts fighting itself... I am proud of my forefathers, but today nothing short of a full border threat DESERVES the presence of honorable, self-sacrificing, and hard working sheepdogs.

Today, I don't recommend anyone join the American Military anymore, despite my presence. Learn to shoot and mountaineer on your own, join a militia, become a firefighter or a paramedic or emergency worker... until Our Military sheds the filth that every president since Lyndon (May he burn in Hell) has dumped into it, it is not worthy of you.

That does not mean that the men that are in today are not worthy... on the contrary, the ones that wade through shit in order to serve their country are bearing even more burdens than the boys that fought in WWII... because they are doing it with the knowledge that they are not only expendable (like every soldier throughout history) but odds are they will be expended pointlessly.

Of course, there ARE unworthy soldiers, there always have been. You can recognize them by their automatic avoidance of anything resembling a threat. They don't die in combat, they die from suicide when they realize that cutting off their penis makes them a eunuch, not a woman. Or they die during childbirth after getting pregnant to avoid deployment. Or they die of HIV.

And yes, I have high hopes for Trump. He has started making inroads into the garbage that covers today's Military, but he is only one man with one shovel and it's a mountain of refuse.
