Personally I'd say that a new console is worth it if you meet at least one of the following criteria:

a) You play a lot of games;
b) You play games with extensive social features;
c) You want to get rid of your cable/satellite entertainment package of 500+ channels with nothing worth watching, in favour of much cheaper Netflix/Amazon/Hulu streaming services.

I don't play a whole lot of games, but I did want to ditch cable. Never looked back.
