Correct. Defensive fighting is useful in competitive martial arts and Ms. Rousey knows how to do that very well- she even knows how to turn a carefully crafted defensive technique into a very effective offensive submission hold or advantage, as she showed in her fight against Alexis Davis a few months back.

But against a larger, faster, and much stronger male opponent who isn't caught by surprise, it's not going to work very well. I've seen it likened to attempting to play catch with hot soup- it only ends quickly and stupidly.

So has his daughter, who won the national championship in Tae Kwan Do. What he told me is that Rousey does what every good martial arts practitioner is trained to do. That is she uses the opponent's weight against them. This is essentially a form of defensive fighting that is every effective in this kind of competition. However, defensive fighting is often not sufficient in real street fighting. If Rousey tried this on the street against a determined male opponent, she would most certainly loose.

Correct on both counts, actually. No sane male fighter would really want to take on that kind of match, for precisely those reasons- at least, not yet. I'm just waiting for Ronda Rousey to shoot her mouth off to the point where she annoys one of the division champions and he takes up her challenge.

I suspect that if such a match ever did come about, the man in question would be strongly inclined to end it quickly, hence my point about a merciful end. But, in order to drive the point home, the match would have to become a massacre, as you say. And there would be no honour in such a victory…

Either he gets beaten or he wins but gets to endure "why did you hit a girl" criticism for the rest of his days.

You mention a swift victory…in this case I don't think that's what's needed. A "lucky punch" or "lucky submission" wouldn't do. A drawn out pounding followed by an almost casual submission would drive the point home.
